Epigenetics and Energy Healing: Can Our Practices Influence Gene Expression?
Epigenetics and Energy Healing is a fascinating field that explores the intricate connection between our genes and the healing energies we engage with.
The Meeting Point of Science and Spirit
Understanding Epigenetics and Energy Healing allows us to appreciate how our practices can influence our health on a genetic level.
I remember a student of mine once saying, during a Reiki class many years ago, “Reiki is relaxation at a molecular level.” At the time, science hadn’t quite caught up with that insight — but his words have stayed with me ever since. Because that’s exactly what so many of us witness in energy healing: a visible, felt transformation that ripples through every level of being, right down to the cellular intelligence of the body.
Reiki has always been about restoring flow — not only in our energy field but also in the communication pathways within the body. And it turns out; modern biology is beginning to describe something remarkably similar.
By incorporating Epigenetics and Energy Healing into our daily routines, we can enhance our overall wellbeing.

What Epigenetics Teaches Us About Healing
We used to think of genes as fixed — as if our DNA were a static instruction manual for life. But epigenetics has shown that genes are more like musical instruments. The notes remain the same, but how they are played — the rhythm, the tone, the harmony — depends on the conductor. That conductor is our internal and external environment: the foods we eat, the air we breathe, the relationships we nurture, the thoughts we repeat, the stresses we carry, and yes — the states of consciousness we inhabit.
Epigenetic mechanisms act like dimmer switches, turning genes up or down depending on what the body perceives as safe or unsafe, nourishing or threatening. So when we bring ourselves into deep rest through meditation, Reiki, or other energy-based practices, we’re not simply relaxing. We may be creating the internal environment that allows certain genes linked to repair, resilience, and balance to switch back on.
Research on Epigenetics and Energy Healing suggests that our environment and practices can profoundly affect our gene expression. By exploring the principles of Epigenetics and Energy Healing, we can utilise our beliefs to impact our physical health.
The concept of epigenetics may also help explain why Reiki is often beneficial for couples who have struggled to conceive after long attempts or medical treatments.
By guiding the body into a state of deep relaxation and safety, Reiki may support the hormonal and energetic balance needed for conception. When the nervous system feels safe, the body can shift from survival mode into openness and readiness — creating conditions where new life can begin.
The Science Behind Stillness
One of the most compelling areas of epigenetic research focuses on stress and its opposite — the relaxation response. When we experience chronic stress, the body releases cortisol and other hormones that keep us alert and ready to act. Over time, this constant state of vigilance can alter gene expression, increasing inflammation and affecting immune function.
However, when we enter a state of deep relaxation — such as during a Reiki session — the opposite occurs. A 2018 review published in Frontiers in Immunology found that mindfulness and relaxation-based practices can downregulate genes associated with inflammation and upregulate those linked to energy metabolism and cellular repair. Essentially, these practices seem to teach the body how to shift from defence mode to healing mode.
Epigenetics and Energy Healing provide a framework for understanding the body’s response to different therapies.
Bruce Lipton and the Biology of Belief
Dr Bruce Lipton, a cellular biologist and author of The Biology of Belief, was one of the first scientists to suggest that our beliefs and perceptions can influence gene expression. His research showed that cells respond to their environment — not only to physical conditions but also to energetic and emotional cues.
Lipton described how cell membranes act as perceptual interfaces, responding to the signals they receive. When those signals are ones of harmony, love, and relaxation, the cells thrive. When they are signals of fear, stress, or conflict, cells shift into a defensive posture. This idea mirrors what we see in energy work: that healing begins not by forcing change, but by changing the inner environment.
Relaxation at a Molecular Level
Returning to my student’s words, “Reiki is relaxation at a molecular level,” we might say that Reiki healing invites the body into a conversation it already knows how to have — a cellular remembering.
During Reiki, the parasympathetic nervous system — the branch responsible for rest and restoration — becomes dominant. Heart rate slows, breath deepens, and the brain shifts into slower rhythms. On the energetic level, this looks and feels like alignment; on the biological level, it’s the body recalibrating to a state of homeostasis.
When that happens repeatedly over time, we may be influencing more than just how we feel day to day. We might be helping to rewrite the body’s epigenetic story — one that favours health, resilience, and longevity.
The Energy-Biology Bridge
Energy healing isn’t about replacing medical science; it’s about complementing it. Reiki doesn’t alter DNA in the way a lab procedure might, but it may create the physiological and energetic conditions in which natural epigenetic repair can flourish.
Some scientists have begun exploring the concept of the biofield — a term used to describe the electromagnetic and subtle energy fields that surround and permeate living beings. This biofield is thought to act as a communication network, influencing processes within the body. Research into biofield therapies, including Reiki, suggests measurable effects on heart rate variability, cortisol levels, and immune markers — all of which play a role in gene regulation.
A New Paradigm of Healing
If we look beyond the language of energy and science, what we find is a shared truth: the body is not a machine; it’s a living system that listens, learns, and adapts. The more we align our practices with that wisdom — through presence, breath, intention and compassion — the more we invite lasting transformation.
Energy healing, then, is not simply about moving energy; it’s about shifting consciousness. It invites us to remember that we are active participants in our own biology. Every moment of mindfulness, every loving intention, every Reiki session becomes a message to our cells: You are safe. You can heal. You can thrive.
The relationship between epigenetics and energy healing reminds us of the extraordinary power of mindful, intentional living.
Through practices like Reiki, meditation, and conscious rest, we can influence both our mental and physical wellbeing — nurturing a state of coherence where the body feels safe enough to thrive.
When we view healing through this lens, epigenetics and energy healing become partners in transformation. They invite us to take part in our own evolution — not by controlling the process, but by creating the right conditions for growth.
As we explore this relationship more deeply, we uncover new pathways for self-care, personal development, and a more holistic approach to health.
Reflective Practice
If you’d like to explore this for yourself, try a simple observation practice over the next week:
1. Notice your state before and after a healing session — perhaps rate your sense of calm, clarity or connection on a scale from one to ten.
2. Track subtle shifts in sleep, digestion, focus, or emotional steadiness.
3. Ask yourself: “What inner environment am I creating for my body today?”
You may begin to see patterns — evidence that your energy practice is also a biological conversation.
