Are you able to express yourself openly and confidently?
We are now entering the higher chakras within the seven-chakra column. So far, we have explored the Root, Sacral, Solar Plexus and Heart Chakras. These chakras are the building blocks for a balanced throat chakra. The main aspects of the throat chakra are self-expression, communication, and creativity.
The Throat Chakra
The throat chakra, known as Vishuddha, is the third of seven major chakras, located centrally at the base of the neck. The colour associated with this chakra is light blue. In balance, we can express ourselves comfortably, communicate calmly, clearly and compassionately, meditate more easily and feel creatively inspired. A good communicator is often a good listener.

What can cause your Throat Chakra to be blocked?
From the day we are born, we learn what is acceptable and what is not acceptable from those around us. We develop rules around how we should express ourselves to survive and be loved. Maybe you were surrounded by those who admired extrovert tendencies, or perhaps being an extrovert was frowned upon. Maybe it was good to cry; maybe it wasn’t.
The rules we choose to apply to ourselves, unconsciously or otherwise, depend on the family we are raised in, the culture and society we live in, and other factors such as the influence of teachers and early school friends.
What forms of expression worked for you growing up will tend to stick into adulthood, whether they still work or not. The more rules we have about what we can safely express, the more our throat chakra has the potential to be unbalanced. As a child, wanting to fit in and be loved is essential to survival, but we can lose our true self and voice in the process.
In addition, as is often the case with victims of child abuse, our voices can be silenced. Where any expression is deemed only worthy of emotional or physical assault from a parent or guardian. We look to them for protection and love, and find that no matter what we do, it’s never enough.
In all cases, we hide behind a mask of what we believed as a child was acceptable to others. As a result, we lose our authentic voice and ability to express ourselves honestly. This is not to say we are dishonest, but we have buried who we honestly are as part of our survival strategy and desire to be loved.

Physical Symptoms of a Blocked Throat Chakra
The throat chakra is associated with the Thyroid and Parathyroid glands. An imbalance can show up as sore throats, neckache, thyroid problems, hearing problems, tinnitus, or asthma.
Here’s how we can support our throat chakra
Energy Healing
It is common for people to have some rules and limits regarding their self-expression and creativity. However, simple energy-based healing techniques such as Reiki, Crystals, Yoga, and Tai Chi may help address minor issues regarding the throat chakra.
Professional Therapy
For more significant issues that have a noticeable and detrimental effect on your life, seeking therapeutic help is your best option. However, none of the issues described in this blog should hold you back from being who you are. On the contrary, therapy can help you rediscover your true self and voice and have the confidence to express yourself fully.
Journaling
Those who have been around my work for a while won’t be surprised to hear me say that journaling is a tool I value highly. In the case of the throat chakra, it provides one of the safest and easiest ways to begin exploring self-expression. There is no right or wrong way to journal; it is a safe space to express your thoughts, ideas, feelings, etc. Whether you scribble in writing, draw or doodle, cut out images from magazines or other sources, or collect quotes, song lyrics, and poems, anything that helps you express yourself will support you in healing or maintaining a healthy throat chakra. A journal can be a place to explore how you might express something before you do, or how you might say something differently in the future. No one needs to read your journal, so make a mess and express yourself.
Eye Movement Integration (EMI)
EMI is a powerful technique I use for healing trauma and PTSD, including child abuse. Any trauma will need to be resolved before we can begin to rediscover ourselves, let alone have the confidence to express who we are.
Get Creative
Creativity is as much a skill we can learn as a talent. We don’t need to be talented to flex those muscles; we just need a medium for our creativity. This can be any hobby that involves arts or crafts. What’s important is that we do it to explore our creativity. It is very much about the journey and not the result. No one needs to see your work, dance like no one is watching, paint like you believe you are the next Picasso and sing like no one is listening.
Nutrition
Eat plenty of fresh fruit at the beginning of your day or on an empty stomach. Many people avoid fruit because of the idea of fructose (sugar). However, there is so much fibre in most fruits that the fructose is slowly released if you eat the whole fruit rather than consuming juices or smoothies. The nutritional benefits far outweigh the quantity of fructose, and if consumed in the morning, they will help eliminate sugary cravings. Fresh fruit will also increase your hydration levels, which are important for your health and your ability to communicate clearly and comfortably.
Crystals for the Throat Chakra
The light to mid-blue crystals can help balance the throat chakra and support any work you do in this area. The most significant ones are Blue Lace Agate, Turquoise, Sodalite, Lapis Lazuli, Aquamarine, Amazonite, Blue Chalcedony, Celestite, Chrysocolla, Larimar, and Ocean Jasper.

FAQs
What are the signs of a blocked throat chakra?
Difficulty speaking up, fear of expressing your opinion, people-pleasing, feeling unheard or misunderstood, and a disconnect between what you think and what you actually say. Physically, people report throat tightness, hoarseness, neck and jaw tension, and thyroid concerns.
What colour is the throat chakra?
Blue — usually a clear sky blue or turquoise, representing calm, honest, clear communication.
What causes the throat chakra to become blocked?
Often it traces back to learning, early on, that self-expression wasn’t safe or welcome — so you built rules around what you could say. Over time, those rules quietly silence your authentic voice. The more “don’t say that” you carry, the more the throat chakra tends to close.
How do you heal or unblock the throat chakra?
Reconnect with honest self-expression — journaling, singing, humming, or chanting the “HAM” mantra, plus throat-opening yoga like Fish or Plough pose. Blue crystals such as lapis lazuli, aquamarine, and blue lace agate support the work, as does reiki. Inner reflection matters here: the voice returns as it becomes safe to use it.
Can Reiki help a blocked throat chakra?
Yes. Reiki gently supports the throat chakra alongside expressive practices, helping ease the tension around speaking your truth. It works best combined with the practical work of actually giving your voice room to be heard.
Chakra work supports overall well-being; it doesn’t replace medical care. Persistent physical symptoms — thyroid issues, chest pain, ongoing pelvic or back pain — should always be checked by a qualified healthcare professional.
