Are You Grounded and Secure In The World?
In this blog, I’m going to explore the Root Chakra. What it is, what signs and situations could indicate the level of wellness of your Root Chakra, and, of course, some tips on what to do if you think your Root Chakra is unbalanced or blocked.
What is the Root Chakra?
The Root Chakra, known as Muladhara, is the first of seven major chakras, located at the base of the spine. Someone whose Root Chakra is balanced feels a sense of belonging in this world. They are happy to be in their body and connect with their body. This person trusts in their ability to survive to meet their needs, especially where physical and material needs are concerned.
The Root Chakra is the first Chakra to pay attention to, as without feeling safe and secure in the world, everything that follows will be a challenge, including working on the remaining 6 Chakras. That’s not to say we ignore the rest, but to recognise that a balanced Root Chakra creates a robust platform for everything else.

What can cause your Root Chakra to be imbalanced?
Traumatic childhood experiences where a child doesn’t feel safe, protected, or loved can result in long-term issues with the Root Chakra.
Abusive relationships, whether they are personal or professional. Abuse creates a sense of insecurity and, as a result, can negatively impact the Root Chakra.
Help is Available
Therapy and healing work can go a long way to resolve the many issues stemming from trauma or abuse.

Life Changes
Any time in your life when you feel uprooted can cause the Root Chakra to become imbalanced. For example, a sudden loss, bereavement, or other forms of loss, divorce, or even moving home, town, or country. These can resolve themselves naturally with time for healing or settle into a new place or situation. However, occasionally we may need a little help to rebalance the Root Chakra under these circumstances.
Sometimes we go through a significant personal change or transformation. We can find that we become a little ungrounded as we adjust to this change, even if it is positive. When we go through this kind of transformation, we may find our sense of belonging can be challenged. It may be that our existing relationships don’t fit us anymore. But, again, this sort of imbalance in the Root Chakra may resolve itself with some time and self-care.
Physical Conditions
The Root Chakra is associated with the Adrenal Glands and the Bones, so issues connected to these body areas may be linked to imbalances in the Root Chakra.
It is natural for us all to experience moments of imbalance in any of the Chakras; it is part of the ebb and flow of life.
As individuals, we may lean towards imbalances in specific chakras, and I’ll do additional blogs on each of the Chakras. But what this means is that you may be someone who, in the main, is very grounded and just finds that occasionally you have an issue in this area. But, on the other hand, you may be someone who has a natural tendency for ungroundedness. This could stem from one of the first two causes of Root Chakra issues, or it may be related to something you are not conscious of.
Noticeable Signs of Ungroundedness:
Experiencing Anxiety and Panic.
Sometimes Depression (depending on the cause).
Being clumsy or accident-prone.
Someone who always seems away with the fairies.
Someone who appears very floaty.
A person who often seems to fall into a room rather than walk into a room.
Ignoring the reality of a situation.
Not being able to stand up for yourself.
Not looking after yourself physically.
A little note about opening and closing Chakras
This is a bit of a pet peeve for me. Some of you may have been led to believe that some chakras should be open and some closed, or that you should close specific chakras before or after some activities. This is nonsense. You are safest, most supported, and balanced if all your chakras operate optimally. This means they are balanced or Open. Open chakras will not make you susceptible to anything. The stronger and more balanced your entire energy system is, the more grounded and protected you are.
OK, mini-rant over.
Here’s what we can do to support our Root Chakra.
Walking in the Woods
My favourite is to spend time with the Tree People. Yes, I admit I hug trees; don’t knock it until you’ve really tried it. But you don’t have to hug trees to ground and balance your root chakra. Being in nature, and in particular the forest, for Root Chakra balancing is the best healing you can get, and it’s free (well, there may be a little car park payment).
Yoga
This is especially useful if you are disconnected from your body. If you lack a sense of belonging, you can also meet new people and make new connections. The people you meet in a Yoga class will be from every walk of life.
Reiki
Of course, I would say that, but Reiki will help balance your whole energy system. This is particularly useful for balancing your chakras and maintaining balance through regular sessions.
Diet
Check that you are getting a substantial quantity of varied proteins in your diet. Keep your diet balanced and healthy and watch out for those binge moments that may be replacing one set of needs with something that will not support you long term.
EFT
Gary Craig, the founder of EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique), sometimes referred to as Tapping, believes it can help with anything. It has been shown to help with recovery from PTSD and Trauma, and I certainly think it could help with any causes I listed above. You can find out how to do EFT on yourself here: The EFT Basic Recipe by Founder Gary Craig – YouTube
Crystals
Carry a little piece of nature with you, either in your pockets or wearing it as jewellery. As a general rule, the black, brown and red crystals tend to balance the Root Chakra. If you would like to look at my handcrafted jewellery, I recommend the ‘Sanctuary’ collection for grounding and balancing your Root Chakra. I love to create perfect synergies for people. If you fancy something made using a unique combination that fits your needs, just get in touch using the form below.
Therapy
This is an essential step if you struggle with deeper-seated issues relating to the Root Chakra. We don’t have to carry the weight of our past with us for the rest of our lives. Change is possible, and I offer a Therapy and Coaching service that can help with any issues I’ve mentioned in this blog. If you want to chat to find out how I can help you, please get in touch or schedule a phone consultation.
I hope you have found that helpful. If you have any questions, pop them in the comments below. You may also be interested in the Chakra Quiz; this can give you a rough idea of the state of each of your chakras.
Next month I’ll be discussing the Sacral Chakra. If you are not already subscribed, sign up now; at the end of the Chakra series, I’ll provide a free Chakra Balancing MP3 to Subscribers. You’ll also get a £20 discount on any of my therapy services or workshops.
FAQ’s
What are the signs of a blocked root chakra?
A blocked root chakra often shows up as anxiety about basic needs, feeling ungrounded or “spaced out”, money worries, restlessness, and trouble making decisions. Physically, people report fatigue, lower-back pain, and digestive niggles. The through-line is a shaky sense of safety — as though the ground beneath you isn’t quite solid.
What causes the root chakra to become blocked?
Anything that unsettles your sense of security: sudden change, financial stress, upheaval, or early experiences where safety wasn’t a given. The root is your foundation, so it tends to wobble when life feels unstable or when you’ve been in survival mode for a long stretch.
How do you unblock the root chakra?
Grounding is the most direct route — bare feet on the earth, walking, gardening, anything that reconnects you to your body and the ground. Gentle energy work such as reiki, grounding meditations, red crystals like red jasper or haematite, and steady daily rhythms all help restore a felt sense of safety.
What colour and element is the root chakra?
Red, linked to the earth element. Red represents vitality, physical presence, and the will to stay rooted in the world.
Can Reiki help balance the root chakra?
Yes. Reiki is a gentle way to support the root chakra alongside grounding practices — it doesn’t force anything; it simply helps you settle back into your body and your sense of being safely here. It pairs naturally with the practical, everyday grounding work that does the heavy lifting.
Chakra work supports overall well-being; it doesn’t replace medical care. Persistent physical symptoms — thyroid issues, chest pain, ongoing pelvic or back pain — should always be checked by a qualified healthcare professional.

Excellent information Tina. Thank you.
